Math Skills to Practice at Home

Dear Parents,

We would like it if you could find the time to practice some number skills at home.

Skip counting

In class we are skip counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s, from different starting numbers, please reinforce this at home.

Number Facts to 10

By the end of Grade 2 your child is expected to know their ‘number facts’ to 20 (The different ways to make 20). To help them reach this goal they need to be totally secure in their number facts to 10 (different ways to make 10). Please practice these at home.

Examples:

4 +_ = 10                          6  + _ = 10

7 and _ makes 10           3 and _ makes 10

0 + _ = 10                        10 + _ = 10

These can then be linked to:

14 + _ = 20                  6 + _ = 20

7 and _ makes 20      13 and  _ makes 20

In class we will be using these skills to make higher multiples of 10

64 + _ = 70

and later in the year at an even higher level,

46 + _ = 60

Thank you for your on-going support with your child’s learning,

The Grade Two Team

Thanks for this – much appreciated. And just to let you know – we are very happy with how your class is run and the resulting interest of Avery in math and reading.   All break he has been devouring books and is now ‘teaching’ his younger sister the math skills you provided below.
