Grade 2 Goes Shopping

Grade 2 students have been honing their Kiswahili skills in order to take a field trip to the local market to buy fresh fruit. Students worked with their Kiswahili teachers to practice key vocabulary as well as questions and answers they can expect when talking to vendors in the market.

Students and teachers visited the local fruit market. Students had to use their Kiswahili skills to identify fruits, negotiate price and purchase items. Students had fun using Kiswahili to communicate. Along with using their Kiswahili, students learned a valuable lesson about money – attempting to buy the most fruit for the least amount of money.

After returning from the market, students worked in groups to prepare the fruits for fruit salad to share with the entire grade and school. Students got a bit messy but they had a lot of fun working together.
