We Are ‘Building’ Knowledge and ‘Constructing’ Understanding

Janusz is a contractor in the making!

Our math focus has been geometry. After learning about 2D and 3D shapes, we practiced building 3D structures with pipe cleaners and coffee stirrers. First we learned how to make basic shapes likes cubes, pyramids and rectangular prisms. After that, we used those shapes to construct larger, more complex structures. This is just one of the many great activities we’ve been doing to learn about geometry and how it is in the world all around us.

  1. We do the same sort of thing in New Zealand with our students and they really, really benefit from the hands on experience of the tasks!
