Current Events

Grade 2 students continue to be creative with finding interesting articles and presenting information to the rest of the class! Read all about the Current Events happening this week from IST Grade 2…

What is a Current Event? A Current Event is something that is happening somewhere in the world NOW! Current Events are news stories that include a title, author, and date of publication. Grade 2 students are doing more than just looking up information, they are asking, “What is happening in our world TODAY?”

Each week two students choose an article to present from newspapers, magazines and Internet sites. Students read the article and then use our Current Events Note Taking Form to answer questions like Who, What, When, Where and Why. Students include their opinion about the article and then present their information to the rest of the class.

Today Noah brought us an interesting article titled Draw Ignites FIFA World Cup Fever from FIFA.com.

Noah shared his opinion with us stating, “32 teams were put in eight groups. This is important because so many people in the world love football.” Noah concluded by saying, “I think this article is interesting because I love football.” Noah created an informational poster to explain more about the teams that will soon be playing at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Henry brought in an informative article about sharks and coral reefs. His article was titled Giving Sharks Safe Homes from the online resource Science News For Kids. Henry stated, “It is important to protect these reefs from over fishing and pollution. Everyone should stop polluting the oceans.”

After presenting both Noah and Henry answered questions from the rest of the class regarding the information from their articles.
