Current Events and the Environment

Grade 2 students continue to be creative with finding interesting articles and presenting information to the rest of the class! Read all about the Current Events happening this week from IST Grade 2…

What is a Current Event? Current Event is something that is happening somewhere in the world NOW! Current Events are news stories that include a title, author, and date of publication. Grade 2 students are doing more than just looking up information, they are asking, “What is happening in our world TODAY?”

Each week two students choose an article to present from newspapers, magazines and Internet sites. Students read the article and then use our Current Events Note Taking Form to answer questions like Who, What, When, Where and Why. Students include their opinion about the article and then present their information to the rest of the class.

Today Faris brought us an interesting article titled A Grim Future For Some Killer Whales from Science News For Kids online.

Faris shared his opinion with us stating, “This information is important because it is an example of how pollution kills wildlife.” Faris concluded by saying, “It’s sad. People have to be careful not to pollute the environment.” Faris’s presentation generated thoughtful discussion about animals and the environment.

Aidan brought in an informative article about global warming. His article was titled Green House Effects and Global Warming from the online resource Kids 4 Clean Air.

Aidan used the interactive SMARTboard to share this Greenhouse Effect video from Science Museum online. This video explains how the Green House Effect works and what people are doing to cause it.

After presenting both Faris and Aidan answered questions from the rest of the class regarding the information from their articles.
