Current Events

Wow! Grade 2 students are really getting creative with finding interesting articles and presenting information to the rest of the class! Read all about the Current Events happening this week from IST Grade 2…

What is a Current Event? Well a Current Event is something that is happening somewhere in the world NOW! Current Events are news stories that include a title, author, and date of publication. Grade 2 students are doing more than just looking up information, they are asking, “What is happening in our world TODAY?”

Each week two students choose an article to present from newspapers, magazines and Internet sites. Students read the article and then use our Current Events Note Taking Form to answer questions like Who, What, When, Where and Why. Students include their opinion about the article and then present their information to the rest of the class.

Today Nuru brought us an interesting article about a Dog ‘Too Big’ To Find a Home from the BBC Newsround online.

Nura stated, “I like this article because I wanted to learn about this dog, Rocky.” Nuru went above and beyond presenting just information. She made copies of the article including pictures and she created activity pages for students to take home and learn more about Rocky, this big lovable dog.

Also in the news this week, Talin reminded us that Berlin and the world has reason to celebrate. Talin, brought in an article that had cultural and family significance. Her article was Berlin Marks 20th Anniversary of The Wall’s Fall from MSNBC online.

Talin shared with the class that her dad actually helped to break down part of the Berlin Wall, as did many who celebrated freedom when it finally came tumbling down. Talin said, “People are free! The East and the West are one.”

Talin also went above and beyond to help her classmates to understand the significance of this Current Event article. She brought in pictures and an actual piece of the Berlin Wall to show. She also wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate this monumental event with bringing German pastries to share with her friends.

After presenting their information, both Nuru and Talin answered questions from the rest of the class regarding the information they presented from their articles. They both did an outstanding job presenting.
