Monster Exchange Project

Grade 2 students in Mr. McKillip’s class have been eagerly involved in a collaborative and creative art/writing project called the Monster Exchange. IST Grade 2m has teamed up with their new Grade 2 buddies in Ms. Yung’s class at SCIS in Shanghai, China to exchange monsters! The Monster Exchange is part of our current unit of inquiry on Fables and Fairy Tales.

Background: Monster Exchange is designed to encourage the development of reading and writing skills while integrating Internet technology into the classroom curriculum. Students read stories about monsters then design an original picture of their own monster. The students must then write a description of the monster, which they exchange with the other group of students. The goal is to then draft a monster that resembles the original monster, relying only on the written description.

Below is a slide presentation of our IST Grade 2m monster descriptions. Students are currently reading and interpreting each other’s writing in order to re-create their partner’s original monster illustration.

Be sure to check back with us soon to see our monsters and how well we recreated our buddies’ illustrations!
