Grade 2 students love using conjunctions in order to get their point across. As a matter of fact, grade 2 students love conjunctions so much that they keep their sentences going on, and on, and on, and on…
We are focusing on how to use conjunctions (or joining words) the right way – to connect words, phrases and clauses ( and not to make run-on sentences).
To introduce conjunctions we watched Conjunction Junction – from School House Rock:
Learn More About Conjunctions!
Try playing the BBC Bitesize Ballon Joining Word Game to practice using and learning more about conjunctions.
Grade 2 students love Grammar! We are having so much fun this year learning about and using grammar in our writing. Our writing just keeps getting better and better as we continue to focus on sentences and sentence structure, contractions as well as parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjectives and now pronouns.
This week we are learning about pronouns. The following explanation of pronouns is from Answers.com:
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. She, herself, it, and this are examples of pronouns. If we substituted pronouns for the nouns in the sentence “Please give the present to Karen,” it would read “Please give it to her.”
To introduce the concept of pronouns we played the Pronoun Game and we watched Schoolhouse Rock – Pronouns!
You see, a pronoun was made to take the place of a noun,
‘Cause saying all those nouns over and over
Can really wear you down!
Grade 2 students have been learning about English Grammar. So far this year students have been focusing their attention on sentences and sentence structure, contractions, and parts of speech like nouns and adjectives.
This week students are learning about verbs. Verbs are action words that tell what nouns do. Examples: to fly, to run, to be, jump, lived
To introduce the concept of verbs students watched and listened to Schoolhouse Rock – VERBS!
Students were inspired to sing their own version of VERBS. Click below to listen to our version.
VERBS!
I get my thing in action (Verb!)
In being, (Verb!) In doing, (Verb!)
In saying…
A verb expresses action, being, or state of being. A verb makes a statement. Yeah, a verb tells it like it is!
(Verb! That’s what’s happening.)
I can tell you when it’s happening,
(Past, present, future tense)
Ooh! Tell you more about what’s happening,
(Say it so it makes some sense)
I can tell you who is happening!
(Verb, you’re so intense)
Every sentence has a subject.
(Noun, person, place, or thing)
Find that subject: Where’s the action?
(Verb can make a subject sing)

This week students are learning about Adjectives. Adjectives are a part of speech that modifies or helps to describe a noun or pronoun. To introduce the concept of adjectives students watched and listened to Schoolhouse Rock – ADJECTIVES!
Grade 2 students have been learning about English Grammar. So far this year students have been focusing their attention on sentences. Students are learning that a sentence is a complete thought. Sentences have two parts; a subject and a predicate. Every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with a punctuation mark.
This week students are learning about Nouns. Nouns can be a person, place, thing or an idea. To introduce the concept of nouns students watched and listened to Schoolhouse Rock – NOUNS!
Students were inspired to sing their own version of NOUNS. Click below to listen to our version.
Well every person you can know,
And every place that you can go,
And anything that you can show,
You know they’re nouns.
A noun’s a special kind of word,
It’s any name you ever heard,
I find it quite interesting,
A noun’s a person, place, or thing.
