Eco-Warroir Bake Sale – Friday 5 March

02/03/2010

The Eco-Warriors along with Student Council would like to announce that on Friday 5 March they will be holding a bake sale to raise monies for the purchase of a Biomass Briquette Machine. (Biomass Briquettes are made from recycled paper and agricultural waste. They are a renewable replacement for fossil fuels such as oil or coal.) Our hope is to purchase this machine before 22 April.

If any of you would like to donate a baked good to help us – we would greatly appreciate it!

Thank you.

IST Eco-Warrior Coordinator

Read to Feed Update

17/12/2009

By now you have hopefully heard about our new resident goat who is living happily on the I.S.T. campus. She is staying here for the duration of our Read to Feed program. During the long holiday, she will be looked at by Mr. Elias, whom has promised to take good care of her.

This week students have received their booklets and should begin collecting sponsors. Students can collect monies in any currency, though monies donated to Heifer International will all be in Tanzanian Shillings.

Planned schedule Weeks of January 18, 2010- February 12, 2010:

• Students read each night and have their record sheet signed by parents.

• Parents encourage nightly ‘reading to help others’ February 16-19, 2010

• Students turn in Read to Feed forms and money in an envelope labeled with their name and class teacher to collection table near front office.

This holiday, if you have access to the Internet, why not try out the websites:

Thank you for your support!

Children Changing the World- One Book at a Time

20/11/2009

Read to Feed!
IST and Heifer International

Our students at IST are ready to help change the lives of friends and neighbors here in Tanzania. And it is possible!

Each year IST student’s work with Heifer International to do what our students do best- and that is READ. Children ask reading sponsors to help them raise money to buy gifts of livestock for impoverished families. Last year we raised enough money to buy several goats for our neighbors in South Beach.

The idea is simple and it works! Instead of providing families in need with nonrenewable sources of food, Heifer International provides a “living loan” of an animal and the training to take care of it.

The family “repays” the living loan by “passing on the gift” of one or more of their offspring and so on…and so on. Just one gift animal can transform an entire community!

We hope you support our students’ efforts to “seize the day” by helping to change the world one book at a time. Sponsor forms will go home the week of December 14, so students can collect sponsors over the break. The four weeks of reading will begin on January 18, 2010. More information will soon follow.

Thank you,
Christy Heitmiller

The Eco-Warriors Need Your Help

01/09/2009

Dear Parents,

This weekend as you stroll up and down the beach with your friends and family would you mind picking up any random Flip Flops (sandles, bata bata, slippers)? Please put the sandles in a plastic bag and have students drop them off at my classroom (room 36). Part of my Eco-Warriors community service will be to create “African” creatures that can be turned into a mobiles and given to various orphanages and hospitals. Click on the link to watch a fantastic docutmentary video called Flip Flop Flotsam – a film about the “flip flop” in East Africa.

Again thank you for your assistance in collecting flip flops. And DONT worry, we are taking sanitary methods to clean these used items.

Asante!
