Independent Artwork for Yearbook

First of all, thanks for all the submissions. In term of age, we have a very diverse group of independent artists from 4-11 years old. Hopefully, they’re an inspiration to all of us. Their work will be published in this yearbook where we see fit, so CONGRATULATIONS!!!

We need more variety of artwork from our young IST artists for the yearbook. Think about a subject that inspires you the most, a learning area that you feel most enthusiastic about, what you’re most gifted in and put that thought in a piece of art.

Submission deadline is the end of January 2012. Have a happy holiday!!

Grade 2 Learning Outcomes and Units of Inquiry

Dear Grade 2 Families,

IST’s Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator together with the Grade 2 team of teachers have put together an informative brochure to help parents learn more about the anticipated learning outcomes for children in Grade 2 at IST. The brochure also includes information about the Units of Inquiry that are planned for Grade 2. You can download a copy under the resources tab of the IST PYP blog.

Tanzania’s Independent

Fifty years ago the British left Tanzania where they were ruling. (but that doesn’t mean that that all British are mean.) Before the British, Germany ruled Tanzania. There was a war and a witch doctor said that if you put river water on yourself the bullets would turn to water, the Tanzanian people believed and they tried it, but it didn’t work. When the British were ruling, Tanzanians were poor. Fifty years ago, Tanzania got their independence. President Nyerere was Tanzania’s first president, he went to see the British Queen to tell her that Tanganyikans were ready to rule Tanzania themselves. Before independence, our country was two separate countries, Zanzibar and Taganyika, when they came together they took the TAN from Tanganyika, the ZAN from Zanzibar. This was a great thing because Tanzanians got their independence, they could rule their own country and have their rights.

A Letter From Santa

Santa needs your kindness

Dear Girls and Boys,

Here at IST it’s that time of the year to show that you have a big heart and do care!

So look ‘round the house and find a gently used toy. Write on it the age and whether for a boy or a girl.

You can also bring in a gently used picture book. Just don’t forget to tell your parents which one you took!

Wrap it up nicely, perhaps a ribbon on top. And bring it to our own little Santa’s Helpers Shop.

From December 5 to December 15 we’ll collect every toy and take them to an orphanage to bring some joy.

For that one toy your bring from your enormous pile, is sure to make at least one child smile!

Student’s Independent Artwork for Yearbook

It has been our tradition to accept student’s independent artwork for yearbook. If your children love to create any kinds of visual art, they might be interested in publishing their work in our yearbook.

All student’s independent artwork is welcome. We cannot guarantee that we’ll publish every piece but we’ll try our best. We especially welcome artwork that supports our yearbook theme, which is “Where Diversity Meets Inspiration” but that is NOT a requirement.

Submission can be made by one of the methods below:

Digital artwork can be emailed directly to me, either with the link to the web where the artwork is saved or as an attachment. My email address is “swiriyaphong@istafrica.com.” (Please see the requirement for digital artwork*)
Drop off the artwork at my desk. The ICT office is right behind the computer labs.

Student’s independent artwork must be original and can be in any forms of visual art such as sketching, drawing, painting, digital (photographs of artwork, etc) or multimedia (e.g. paper marche, clay, etc.) That is our only requirement for submission.

*Digital artwork must be at least 2MB in size.

The submission deadline is by the end of January 2012.

Is that Fair?

As we learned about the process of getting bananas, chocolate and other goods from the Field to the Table we wondered what it feels like for the people involved in this process. Some simulation games quickly ignited a sense of activism in students who had to play the laborers unprotected by Fair Trade laws. We made a Fair Trade agreement to bring our simulations to justice, but that wasn’t enough, we decided to change our ways as consumers. Here is the campaign launched by our budding Fair Trade activists:

“If you don’t know about fair trade look around the elementary ist school for fair trade posters. They’ll tell you all about fair trade. My friends called Arran, Arthur, Aliyyun, Ethan and Joshua are putting fair trade posters around the elementary ist school. And now the hole class is doing it. We”ve done alot of hard work on it. So we are famous around the school no just joking buy Fair Trade” Ethan and Arran
